Terror Tube: The X-Files

By Kraven: The She Wolf

“The truth is out there” was the motto of
this sci/fi horror series about two FBI agents
who sort out the stranger cases that the FBI couldn’t or wouldn’t cover.  His name
was Fox Mulder, a believer in the unknown and the world of wonder.  She, Dana
Scully, Fox’s partner, a born skeptic stood beside Mulder as they together
discovered the true nature of the world we live in and found that there was more
to it than meets the eye.  A paranormal side hidden away from the rest of us and
was Mulder’s only mission in life to uncover.

Created by Chris Carter, the X-Files became an in-
stant hit right out of the gate when it premiered on Sep-
tember 10th 1993.  Carter, a devoted fan as a child to the
classic horror series Kolchak: The Night Stalker and the
wonders of The Twilight Zone, sought out to create a
series of his own mixing both horror and sci/fi elements
and fashion a series around both genres.  Running nine
years, The X-Files was 2nd only to Supernatural in series
longevity surpassing both Buffy and Charmed as the
other long running genre series.

Fox Mulder’s main objective was to find his little
sister who vanished years earlier as a child and was his
never ending driving force to discover the true nature of the world and its hidden
mysteries.  Together with Scully, the two would meet alien beings, strange people,
freaks, vampires, werewolves and even a Fluke Man who was so popular, that he
was turned into an action figure when a toy line was created around the series.
There was an Alien Bounty Hunter who showed up from time to time and other
creatures that the pair encountered from week to week.

Much in the same way that Kolchak: The Night Stalker
inspired Carter to create The X-Files, the series was the
inspiration for other series that followed such as Buffy,
Charmed and very much directly inspired Fringe.  Two
feature films were produced under the X-Files banner with
both Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillan Anderson)
returning to play their FBI roles.  A third film was talked
about but to date of this publication, it has yet to surface.
Maybe one day Mulder and Scully will return again and
seek out the truth once more.
