It was a dark night. Robert was looking up at the sky fearlessly. He was looking
into the stars, trying to understand Gods world. Suddenly, he saw a bright and
sparkling light which flashed past with a loud and unusual sound. Soon after,
there was a loud bang. It was as if a bomb had just gone off. All of the people
in the street woke up immediately and looked out of their windows.
“What was that, David?” asked Kevin through the opposite window.
“Don't know,” replied David.
Then, another loud noise was heard and the electricity blacked out. Some
people started to come out of their houses and asked each other a few
questions.
"What do you think that was?" asked David.
"That was very loud noise. Could it be possible that a war has started? Or has
a bomb gone off somewhere? What do you think Robert?" Kevin asked all at
once.
"I don't know what that was, but I just saw something fast go by", said Robert
"Yes, I saw that as well!" said a member of the small crowd that had gathered.
"Yes, I saw it to! It looked like it was a massive fireball", said an old man from
within the crowd. Mr Kevin took out his mobile phone so he could try and make
a phone call but there was no reception. This started to worry him.
"What are you taking about, could this have been a UFO? Mr Jones is your
mobile phone working?" asked Kevin anxiously. Mr Jones took out his mobile
phone. "Oh, my phone has also stopped working. I also remember seeing
something bright go past, it looked like a big fireball", said Mr Jones.
Robert replied "In my opinion, it was a UFO. Think about it, there was a loud
noise and then the electricity blacked out and then our phones stopped
working. I think it was a UFO. Everyone started to talk amongst themselves.
They all agreed on the fact that it was a UFO.
"I think it was a UFO that was sent to find out about us humans. Maybe it will
abduct us. Who knows what planet they are from and by stopping our
communications they have stopped us from calling for help." After hearing this,
an atmosphere of fear had been created. Scenes from the latest alien movie
began to swim inside people heads.
"Hey look over there!" yelled a man standing on a rooftop. There so much
smoke over there think there are flames as well. The UFO landed over there!
Jesus Christ! The aliens have started their invasion! They will destroy all of
mankind. I have heard that they are like demons but even worse! They don't
have any mercy. They rip up bodies and use blood as the fuel in their
machines. Compared to them we have the strength of an ant!" yelled Kevin at
the top of his voice. Fear could be seen on everyone faces. At that moment,
there was another loud noise and everyone looked at each other.
"If we want to stay alive, we have to run away from here. Otherwise we won't
have any eyes to see with. We won't have any ears to hear with and our souls
will wander as aliens forever. Death does not wait for anyone. If we wait, we will
surely die." Robert yelled this as loud as he could.
After hearing this, a small drunken man replied, "You're all scared of some
aliens will fight them. You're all scared of death but I will face them. Don't be
afraid, we will show them the consequences of messing with us!" Despite this,
everyone ran to their flats quietly smiling to themselves. Their hearts filled with
a strange fear.
"Wait, we should talk to the aliens. Who knows? Maybe they're here for some
other reason. What will we gain from running away like this?" said Kevin.
"Kevin, you have grown old, that is why you do not worry about your life. We do,
and anyway, they will grind you old bones to powder before you can even talk to
them. Who knows if they can even understand our language?" said David.
Many of the people in the crowd agreed with him about this. Kevin noticed this
and decided to stay quiet. "ET get out of here!" yelled Robert from the top of a
building.
Robert then got down and turned to the old lady who lived opposite him and
said, "Aunty, have you got your things?" The old lady, who was a second
mother to Robert, replied, "Yes dear, but where will we go?"
"Anywhere, somewhere very far from here, where the shadow of death does not
exist." said Robert whilst picking up their things.
Meanwhile, people were scrambling about letting their friends and relatives know
about what had happened. Word of mouth was now the only form of
communication after every one of the phones had stopped working. People
from this street warned those that lived in the next street who then went on to
warn the people of the street after that. It had created a very loud noise. They
all thought that running was the only way they could save themselves. It
seemed as if someone was playing an eerie tune on a guitar inside their heads
and the tune slowly spread to each corner of their minds, stopping them from
thinking.
Robert became everyone's unofficial leader as everyone gathered out on the
street a second time. It was then that someone asked, "What should we do
Robert?"
A brave Robert replied, "We should either leave this place or leave all hope of
staying alive. Gather only money, valuable jewellery and anything else that is
important. Leave everything else here. This way it will be easier for us to get
out of here. If we stay alive, we can come back, but for now, farewell my friends"
and with that he went to the car with the old lady.
Everyone else followed suit. Some went to cars and some to trucks. They got
into any vehicles they could find. Lines of tension could plainly be seen on
everyone forehead. Some were worried about the present while others worried
about the future, but all had the will to stay alive. As they all fled, they warned
everyone and anyone that they saw. They let everyone know that they should
flee if they wanted to live.
During the next few hours the whole street was deserted. They only thing left
was the smoke from cars, the silence of the floating dust and deserted buildings
that looked as if they had been that way for thousands of years, as if they were
haunted.
On the other side of the city, the Government was on full alert. The army, navy
and air force were on standby, ready for battle. People from every part of the
city were trying to escape. Some people were talking to government officials
and astronauts were being told to abort their missions and return home.
Scientists were trying to find out what was going on. The Government now had
only one responsibility and that was to control the chaos that had grown
amongst the people. One message was broadcast on all the radio stations and
TV channels. It was, we won't let any harm come to you, but we ask that you
please stay calm
All the scientists in the space center had come together to analyze the situation
around them. "Could this be an alien invasion? asked a junior scientist.
"It could be. We have just received word that there is no news from the plane
we sent out and that all the city communication systems have stopped working.
We can't communicate with them at all." said the senior scientist.
The space centre chief scientist now spoke, "Mr Gray, I think the aliens jammed
our communications to stop us from getting any information so that it is easier
for them to go in and do their jobs. They probably destroyed our plane. Sir, I
think the aliens are very powerful, they got through all our radars and they
aren't being detected by our satellites." This was said by one of the centre best
scientists, Roy.
At that moment, an assistant scientist came into the room and said, "Mr Roy,
there a man out here wanting to see you. He's from the area in which the UFO
crashed. He says his name is Robert."
"Alright, take him to my office. I l be right there." replied Roy.
After a while, Roy walked into his office. "So, you are Robert. You say that you
are from the area that the UFO was spotted,i s that true?"
All in one breath, Robert replied, "Yes it is, I was looking through my window
during the night when I saw something bright go past. It looked like fire, it was
very bright. It wasn't just me; there were lots of other people who saw it as well.
There were also 3 or 4 more explosions after short periods of time. After that,
the electricity blacked out and our phones stopped working. We also saw some
flames in the darkness. We think the aliens landed their UFO there and they
are calling reinforcements."
"Robert, that bright thing you saw, did it look round?" asked Roy.
"Yes, yes it was. Nearly all of us saw it and we heard loud noises as well. Roy
you can save people. I have heard great things about you and your
intelligence. Roy, I have seen death. I used to be in the army, I have seen
people suffering, screaming and crying. I have seen people with fatal wounds.
It is not easy seeing all of that."
Roy then asked, “What took you so long in getting here?”
"I had to take the old lady who lives across from me to safety and then on the
way back there were lots of traffic jams. I thought I should come and tell you
what was going on so that you could help everyone. Roy, I not scared of death,
I will help you in any way that I can. I don have any family. All I had was the old
lady and she is now in a safe place." said Robert.
Don't worry. We will do the best we can. Please sit down, I'll be right back. After
saying this, Roy left to go and ask the chief if he could go to the UFO site.
"No, I can't let you go straight into the clutches of death." said the chief.
"Please believe me, nothing will happen. I just want to try and talk to the aliens."
replied Roy.
"So you really think the aliens will listen to you? They will rip your body to
pieces.
"Sir, I have to die someday. Be it now or some other day, it doesn't matter. If
the death of one man can save all of mankind; that man should lay down his
life." said Roy.
"One man alright, we will send someone else. You are our best scientist."
replied the chief.
"Sir, that's why I want to go look."
"You are trying to fight an unknown enemy. You have not even seen them. You
do not know how powerful they are. You don't even know their numbers. You
are challenging death." said the chief.
"Sir, I want to go because I am the best." replied Roy
"Roy, do what you want, but you don't have my permission to go there. Think
twice before you go. You e only 30 years old; you have your whole life ahead of
you." With that the chief left.
Roy went back to Robert. They took a transmission system, some weapons and
some scientific equipment, put it in their truck and set off. On the way, they got
stuck in a traffic jam with lots of noise and lots of smoke. They eventually got
through all of this and a little while later, they came to the crash site. It was a
totally isolated area. There was silence in all four directions. The only noise
was a few birds singing in the trees. "Roy, that my flat over there." Robert
broke the silence
"Okay, tell me where you saw the UFO."
"Over there." said Robert, pointing in another direction.
"Okay, let's go," said Roy.
After a while, they both came to a wide open area with a few scattered trees.
They saw a big power station. It had been totally destroyed. Nearby, they saw
pieces of a plane. Roy began to think. He grabbed a device from the truck and
took some readings. He also took readings from the plane and the power
station. After this, he went all the way around the power station. After a brief
period of time, he came back to the truck. Robert anxiously tried to read the
expression on his face.
"Robert you're a stupid man whose stupidity has led to problems being created
for innocent people!" yelled Roy in anger.
Robert hadn't expected Roy to say this but he wanted to know the reason for
this sudden outburst. "Why, what did I do?"
"It was just a plane. It crashed into the power station because of engine
problems. That caused the electricity to cut out and the explosions that you
heard. At the same time, a magnetic field was created. That's why everyone 's
mobile phones and the radio in the plane stopped working. The second plane
also went through here. It crashed because of the magnetic field as well." said
Roy.
"But it is the stupidity of people like you that instilled fear into everyone hearts.
You believe that whatever anyone says is true, without trying to find out what
really is the case. You believe it without using your common sense. You're so
gullible. Do you know how many problems you have created for everyone? If
you had been courageous just once and stepped a little closer, you would have
seen what the truth was and you wouldn't have given birth to such a big lie."
"There is a lot of talk about aliens around here. There are also lots of alien
movies made here. A few years ago a man claimed that he saw aliens here.
There was also an alien movie released just recently." said Robert.
"That means that this area is very sensitive to aliens and one must think before
speaking about them. Rumours spread faster in sensitive areas. By the time it
reaches the second or third person, the truth gradually changes to a big lie and
everyone thinks that this is the truth. Just like a game of Chinese Whispers."
said Roy, “Oh well. What’s done is done. We have to bring the truth forward to
try and end this rumour.”
They both went back to the Space Centre where they told everyone what really
happened. With the help of the media, they tried to end the illusion that
everyone was in. They showed pictures of the crash site to everyone and
clearly told them what had happened. Slowly, people began to return to their
homes. Roy received the award for most Courageous Scientist
