Diary of The Dead
4 Gravestones
First came the Night, the Dawn and the Day, followed by the Land and
now the zombie master has gone and did it again. George A. Romero
brings his walking dead series full circle with his new film “Diary of The
Dead.” Shot in the same vein as Blair Witch where the lens of the camera
tells the story by who ever is wielding it. This time Romero takes us back to
when the undead out break is just starting to over take Earth, never mind that
its 40 years later from Night and now the people on the run from the walking
dead are using video and Internet computers. Things that were nothing more
then sci/fi when in 1968, Romero changed the way the world look upon the
zombie in his now classic film.
But ok..aside from that fact that this story is said by old George himself to
be taking place at the dawn of the undead take over and its 40 years later?
The film is still all George and has all the same stuff that has made all his
zombie movie before stand out as the masters that are. Any movie short or
feature film over the last 40 years pays homage to the series that started the
modern zombie film that began with “Night of The Living Dead.” But the
Father of zombies tells this story from a new point of view. As with “Blair
Witch” or “Cloverfield”, the point of view of the story is told from the hand held
camera that is carried throughout the film reporting on what’s happening in
real time as though the actions of the movie are really happening. This effect
worked great in the other two films I spoke of but it really kicks ass as we the
viewer are drawn into the plot as though we are there fighting for life among
the zombie hoards.
Although this is not as bloody as the other “Dead”, this one tells the story
from one cool advantage point that the others could have never done. You
really feel like you are there fleeing from the human monsters all the way as if
it were a bad dream you are in the middle of and creatures are all around
trying to eat you. The zombies are always looking damn good and the
effects are done mostly on set-in camera with a little CGI thrown in to do the
things that can’t be done on set with actors. I liked this new take on the
Romero series and liked that he didn’t just do the same old same old thing.
Good for you George for coming up with something new even though we
have seen this format all before with other movies. I just hope that the Father
of the dead has at least one more zombie romp left still in him. We will be
waiting George......we will be waiting.
Frankenstein’s Bloody Terror
3 Gravestones
I wanted to review this movie myself since I had not seen this little creature
feature since Feb. 1974.....yeah that’s right 35 years. This movie I first saw
as a child on my old B&W TV set long before cable (in New York anyway)
and long before becoming the publisher of this horror magazine. Yet over the
years, this movie would pop into my mind now and if for any other reason
than I am a fan of all horror. New, old, classic and silent but this damn movie
always haunted me party because I only saw it once as a child and never
again. I knew the title though that would miss lead most who never saw this
film about a werewolf and two vampires (No Frankenstein) at all and always
wanted to see it again but those older mostly lost little films are hard to fine
let alone get your hands on. But low and behold I found it through of all
places “Net Flix.” And after 35 years, I got to see this movie once more as
not only a grown up (though some may say otherwise) but also as a horror
magazine publisher.
The movie....again don’t go by the title, tells the story of a man being bitten
by a werewolf and well you know the rest. The werewolf in question is non-
other Spain’s Lon Chaney, Paul Naschy (read all about him in Werewolf
Magazine Issue #8 by Robert Freese) who after being attacked by a beast
becomes one. Back in the days when an actor played both man and beast,
Naschy is every bit as good as our Chaney in playing a man torn by his good
nature and the monster that hides within. Like Chaney, Naschy has made the
werewolf his own and plays the creature in not only this film but in many
always being a werewolf but he is so damn good at it. I remember seeing
his film “The Craving” back in 1989 and over the years his werewolf work as
only gotten better with age...or in this case many full moons. Even the
werewolf make-up for its day is not bad and is believable for 1968 when this
film came out.
It may have been 35 years this past Feb. And I know that date from a
listing on the Chiller Theater web site of the classic show that ran in the late
60's and 70's and has all movies listed with their dates and I saw this little
gem one week after watching another little flick called “Frankenstein vs
Dracula.” A few years ago I was able to look up to the night that I first saw
this movie and funny never knowing that all these years after not only would I
get to see it again but also review it for my own horror magazine.
Sins of The Father reviewed by Dark Soul
4 Gravestones
The guys from Light & Dark Production have done it again with this the next
installment in the saga of The Black Rose Killer. Yeah that's right the black
clad nightmare of the film "Fear of The Dark" once again returns for one last
go around at turning people into his little playthings.
This time out the story of The Black Rose Killer picks up where the last two
films left off only now its many years after his last series of murders and now
an old man on his death bed. He is being interviewed by someone who lost
loved ones to the manic and now the Killer tells his story from when he first
started taking souls to when he first done's the black jump suit and mask. His
exploits are told mostly through bloody flash backs from "Fear of The Dark"
and "The Tenement" as the killers legacy from the first two films are now all
tied together into one bloody little bow.
With this new film director Glen Baisley is at his best and truly shows the
growth of the film maker. The story, layout and shooting of this movie over is
"Fear of The Dark" is much more of that of a pro and one can only wonder
what other terrors this movie maker has planned for us in the years ahead.
Will The Black Rose Killer once again return for more bloodplay. Chck in with
up coming Blood Moon Risnig issues to find out.
