Welcome back! Springtime is ending and summer is almost here. I got a couple of hot books for you to check out. A couple of them have been made into movies and some should be. Well, before we I move on to brand new books I had a taste of something older. The books I will be reviewing is Stephen King collection of short stories, renegade wildlife, possession of the sexy kind and revenge infesting life itself.
D.W. Jones
Skeleton Crew by Stephen King I was in the mood for something older to read, some vintage King. So I picked up his collection of short stories, especially since the one story The Mist was recently made into a movie. This collection was a more mellow version overall compare to other books I read by King. But there was a great variety of stories to satisfy any horror reader. The first story I enjoyed was the The Mist. It is the longest story of the collection as tells about a group of people trapped in a supermarket when the fog from hell sweeps over the town to un- leash unmentionable creatures. Besides the thrills of not knowing where the creatures coming from and how they will attack but how the people inside the market react. It tells a very realistic reaction to a crisis. The movie of this story was just made and it was good but with a more shocking ending. Another story I enjoyed is The Monkey. It tells the story of a man whose childhood fear that comes back to haunt him again and possible the children. This story works because of the innocence of the fear that most kids have and how it carries over to adulthood where the fear will rear is ugly head when least expected. Many people will probably relate to it I recommend this book because it’s a King books but also to view much of his early work.
The Ruins by Scott Smith I ran across this book by accident and almost passed it up. But then the movie came out and wanted to read the book before seeing the movie. I am glad I did and I suggest you do the same. Scott Smith should sue the film makers for what they did to his book. But enough of that. The book took a while to get started but once it did, it kept you wrapped up until the final pages. The story begins with four college students on a vacations to Mexico living it up before they have to start the rest of their lives. They are hanging on the beach, drinking and partying day and night. After a while, looking for an adventure, they go with a friend to find his brother at an old archaeological dig. That where things go wrong. After trudging the jungle and stumbling upon a village, they finally find the path leading to the dig. But after an unfortunate mistake the villagers trap them on the hill where the dig is going and won’t let them off. But worse than that is there is something else lurking in the jungle waiting for its chance to pounce. Now they have to hold on just long enough for help to come. If they can survive. Smith story got rave reviews and it was justified. The story isn’t full of action but full of tense thrills waiting on the edge. And the best part about is that when you find the hook, it is worth the wait. The characters are okay and fleshed out in their different views. I recommend this book on its own and without ever and I mean ever seeing the movie.
The Devil Inside by Jenna Black This is one the those books that the cover alone got my attention and just had t read it. But like any good book, the story has to live up to the promise of a good cover. In this case, it does. Black tells an thrilling story full of action and never slows down. The story tells about a young excorcist named Morgan Kingsley, the best at her game. Her job, destroy all illegal possessions by demons. She hates demons legal and illegal and wishes she can destroy them all. But Morgan does what she can. After a hard job in the Midwest, she doesn’t feel the same and starts seeing and hearing thing. Then people start trying to kill her. And then the worst thing that could ever happen to her; she is somehow possessed by a demon. Now she is on the run from authorities and people who are trying to kill her. Will she stay alive long enough to find out how she got a demon inside her, who is looking to kill her and how everything she believed in is turned upside down. Black tells an original story that starts out fast and never stops. Her main character Morgan is both strong and determined yet shows the vulnerability that you loved to see in a heroine. The surrounding characters are just as good and realistic. The plot is interesting and changes just enough to keep you turning the pages. The story is graphic both in violence and certain sexual situations so if be careful if you blush easy. I recommend this book for anyone who want something different.
